OUR MISSION

Multicultural literature within reach--every child, everywhere!

~With a "mirror" book and a "window book in hand, reading proficiency is at the front door~

 

 

 

 

 

 

Project Mirrors & Windows is a newly minted, progressive organization whose leading objective is to promote child literacy by providing high quality multicultural children's books to all children. Our goal is to increase the volume of "mirror" and "window" books upon the shelves of every public, school, and classroom library. 

Why multicultural books? 

  1. Along with visualizing, summarizing, inferring, synthesizing, and asking questions, proficient readers make connections to what they are reading.

  2. Children of color have a text connection disadvantage compared to white children due to the high volume of children's literature written by white authors about white people.

  3. Multicultural children's books allow young readers to have fulfilling reading experiences; readers simultenously relate to the characters within the story while asserting their personal identity.

  4. Multicultural literature fosters identity development; children envision the future and the possibilities it may bring as they see people who look like they do accomplish many great things.

Project Mirrors & Windows Aims To:

  • Increase the volume of children's multicultural literature accessible to the public.

  • Provide children with "mirror" books--literature that reflects the young reader.

  • Provide children with "window" books--literature that portrays the lives of others for the young reader to view.

  • Foster childrens' literacy through text-to-self, text-to-text, and text-to-world connections.

  • Increase public awareness on the subject of children's multicultural literature and the urgent need for "mirror" and "window" books to foster identity development and to envision endless possibilities for future.
